Hi troops!

My name is Joyce Young, and me and my hubby Michael are planning to move to Fairbanks in just a couple of months!

We are both already 501st - I am TB 9449 and he is TK 0014. I have been a Legion member since 2002, and was the girl who starting to build the membership system in 2001 when I was still 'just a Klingon'. Since then I have been called "Data Droid" and while I tend to "troop" more than "trek" these days, I will still always be a Klingon first Smiler

Besided my Klingon and scout costumes, I also have Sith Cheerleader, plus a small assortment of sci-fi costumes and a huge affinity for costuming in general. I am also a Tribal Style belly Dancer by night, and a web programmer by day.

Michael became a trooper shortly after we met (at C2) in 2004, the same timespan when I moved from Colorado to Florida to be with him. We are really looking forward to get back to cold weather (he is from Virginia and I have lived in Maine and Colorado) but neigther of us has ever had to have an engine block heater on our vehicles before so that should be interesting....

Hubby is clean trooper, and does an AWESOME Ming the Merciless. He is a Network Engineer by day, and PC gamer by night, who also loves DVDs (we call him the "CineMaster" round these parts Smiler and we recently got him a 61" HDTV. And yes, we do like to host movie nights, once we get settled in!

We hopo to be leaving Florida first of august, and will be driving with my van full of our 11 animals (2 cats, 2 ferrets, 1 bearded dragon, and 7 snakes) and his new truck towing a 18 foot box trailer with mostly belongings, and not a lot of furniture since we are having to scale down....

btw: Know of anyone looking to hire some computer folks? Both me and the hubby are currently looking for jobs and we hope for one of us to secure employment before we leave Florida...

Looking forward to meeting everyone in a few months!

Welcome. I'm sure you'll enjoy being in Alaska. Though I can't vouch for living in Fairbanks (especially in the winter, as I've never lived there) it's a very nice place.

Enjoy yourselves.

I lived in both Anchorage and Fairbanks and they both have there upsides. I hear heating fuel is going to be ridiculous this winter.

Fairbanks has its good side, but it also get to be minus 50 in the winter, and up to 90 plus in the summer. It is a smaller city, so the job market might be tight. We do have a member in Fairbanks with the military up there, so I'm sure he could use the company, and get some troops started up there. The turf would be all yours.

Stop off in Anchorage if you get the chance. We'll try to help you out if we can. Looking forward to saying hello.

Hey, glad to hear ya are moving up here, I am a potentail future member, working on a RC suit. There is another guy at Eilson AFB by north pole who is a 501st member, but havent heard from him in a while, might be deployed, I deploy in Sep/Oct. I will say that it is definately a different experience up here. Not sure what the job market for your specialties are, but fairbanks is starting to grow more, getting more buisinesses and such working their way up here. Glad to see someone else gonna be all the way up here.

woohoo, fairbanks is going to have 2 more troopers on the way! I am in Juneau myself. I have never been to fairbanks but I hear it is very nice. My fiancee TI-7108 went to college there. I should ask him about it Smiler

There is an alaskan job site with all local listings. I am in the middle of moving right now so I cant get the bookmark but I will email it to you as soon as I have access to my PC again.

Welcome to Alaska!!

Are you referring to the alaska job bank?

http://www.jobs.state.ak.us/

It's pretty helpful.

Let me suggest you look at some of the energy cost stories in the Anchorage Daily News. I believe its: adn.com. Not a very good prospect for gasoline or home heating fuel costs, (which you WILL need during the LONG winter. Good Luck

JB, thanks for the tip on the job search site. I had not seen that one yet.

Graywolf, we are currently only looking at rentals that include heat. Better safe to start!

Not a bad idea. It can get to 50 below!

You might take a look at the website for the Fairbanks News Miner, too

Welp, UAF gave me a job too so I reckon it's too late to back out now! Wink I suppose I'll have to start drawing up plans for an AT-AT ice sculpture after all.
